Program Purpose and Goals Special needs students, primarily grades kindergarten through 8, with behavioral disabilities are enrolled in a strong academic program designed to assist students to become independent learners and problems solvers. Instruction is sequenced and programs are continually maintained. The faculty and staff work to transition the students back to the student's home school district. The new P.A.S.S.E.S. Program classroom specializes in a curriculum for children diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. All students are eligible for related and counseling services. A computer lab, life skills room, reward activity room and television studio are part of daily education. A school store and career exploration study help students meet New Jersey's school-to-work requirements. Program Description Archway School, Washington Township is a New Jersey Department of Education approved private school that follows a calendar providing for 180 student instructional days. Students attend school Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The school year begins in September and ends in June with a 35 day extended school year available July through early August for students who would need continuation as well as review of all academic subjects. The students IEP governs the student's instructional program and the program is designed for delivery to the student at his/her appropriate instructional level. Archway School, Washington Township opened in 1989 and occupies approximately eight acres of ground in the rapidly growing community of Washington Township in Gloucester County, New Jersey. Class size is governed by State guidelines and is therefore kept small. The school serves up to 13 years of age and provides an extensive program of relative services. Three full-time School Social Worker/Counselors and a full-time nurse are available to the students. Speech therapy, physical therapy, and occupational therapy are provided for those whose IEP calls for the service. Students are afforded a physical education program under the guidelines of a certified physical education instructor and a certified art instructor works with each class weekly. A cafeteria staff meets the nutritional needs of the students. Breakfast and lunch is available as part of the overall school program. The Archway School, Washington Township professional staff has appropriate State certification for their responsibilities. Teachers and staff adhere to a strict student behavior modification model that is very necessary when working with behavior disabilities. Counseling also plays an important role in the Archway School, Washington Township program. The eight semi-wooded acres that surround the school afford the students ample opportunity for supervised play and a quiet setting away from commercial and general distractions. A portion of the grounds has been set aside for a children's playground.
Criteria for Participation Placement is recommended and requested by the student's home school district child study team. Upon receipt of the recommendation, request for placement and child study team reports from the home school district, Archway School will receive the reports, schedule an interview with the child and parent and make an administrative decision with regard to enrolling the child in Archway School, Washington Township.
